Four tracks of hands-on community work

Everything we run falls into four program tracks. Each has its own methods, its own beneficiaries and its own measurable goals — and all of them answer to the same mission: a community where people know, support and understand one another.

Track 1 — Community Integration & Multicultural Dialogue

Program overview

Integration works when it is mutual. This track creates regular, welcoming settings where newcomers and long-term residents meet as equals: weekly Finnish–Russian language tables, moderated neighbourhood discussion circles, orientation workshops on Finnish public services, and informal coffee mornings hosted together with local parishes and libraries. Every format is facilitated, free of charge, and open to all.

Target beneficiaries

Newly arrived residents and immigrants settling in North Karelia; long-term local residents who want to know their new neighbours; returnees and second-generation families navigating between cultures.

Key objectives

  • Lower the social and linguistic barriers that isolate newcomers in their first years
  • Build durable, person-to-person relationships across language communities
  • Increase newcomers' practical knowledge of Finnish services, rights and everyday life
  • Give local residents a constructive, human channel for curiosity about their new neighbours

Track 2 — Youth Mentorship & Educational Initiatives

Program overview

Young people carry the future of every community — and they need adults who show up consistently. This track pairs trained volunteer mentors with young people aged 10–18, runs weekly homework and study-support clubs, and organises skill-building weekends covering media literacy, civic participation, working-life skills and the outdoors. Our summer camp brings it all together once a year.

Target beneficiaries

Children and young people aged 10–18, with priority for those from immigrant or low-income families; young adults preparing for further education or their first jobs; parents seeking support for their children's schooling.

Key objectives

  • Improve school outcomes and study confidence through consistent tutoring and mentorship
  • Develop practical life skills: media literacy, financial basics, civic knowledge
  • Strengthen young people's sense of agency and belonging in Finnish society
  • Connect youth with positive adult role models across cultural backgrounds

Track 3 — Cultural Heritage & Arts Exchange

Program overview

Culture is how a community remembers itself and introduces itself to others. This track runs community storytelling evenings, records family histories into a growing oral archive, curates travelling exhibitions such as Stories Across Borders, and organises concerts and neighbourhood cultural festivals together with local artists, schools and parishes. Finnish, Karelian and Russian traditions share the same stage — deliberately.

Target beneficiaries

The general public in our region; older residents whose memories and skills deserve recording; local artists and performers; schools seeking living heritage content for their classrooms.

Key objectives

  • Preserve and share the cultural heritage of all communities in our region
  • Create public encounters with culture that are free, local and welcoming
  • Give older residents a meaningful role as carriers of memory and craft
  • Use art and story to make complex histories discussable and shared

Track 4 — Social Welfare & Local Support Services

Program overview

Sometimes what a family needs first is not a program but practical help, delivered quietly and without judgement. This track provides confidential guidance appointments on services and benefits, food and household aid in cooperation with local partners, accompaniment to authorities for those who struggle with language, and seasonal support campaigns for families in acute difficulty.

Target beneficiaries

Families and individuals in financial or social difficulty; elderly residents living alone; newcomers navigating Finnish public services; anyone in our region facing a hard season of life.

Key objectives

  • Ensure no family in our reach faces crisis alone or uninformed
  • Provide dignified, confidential practical assistance quickly
  • Connect people to the right public services at the right time
  • Prevent isolation among elderly and vulnerable residents
